Mozart’s Overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio
The Abduction from the Seraglio (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) is a singspiel – a form of German-language music drama (some interpret it now as a genre of opera with spoken word). Mozart wrote this singspiel based on Christoph Friedrich Bretzner’s libretto Belmont und Constanze, oder Die Entführung aus dem Serail. The plot tells the story of hero Belmonte and his servant Pedrillo as they attempt to rescue his true love Constanze after she was abducted and sold by pirates to a Turkish Pasha named Osmin. Osmin ends up taking pity on Belmonte, pardoning both him and Constanze after their attempts at escape. This singspiel premiered in July 1782 in Vienna under Mozart’s baton. It was a popular and therefore familiar story for the audiences in Vienna at the time.
Mozart started to compose this singspiel when he was 25 and undergoing a tense relationship with an important patron (the Archbishop of Vienna) as well as a tumultuous love life. He loved to compose operas, saying he would be happy to earn his living composing nothing but operas. Mozart channeled a Turkish-inspired style specifically for the overture, the chorus in Act 1, and the final chorus of the singspiel.
In his youth, Mozart’s travels led to the development of his stylistic toolbox – especially his tendency to write in a highly varied musical language made up of many different moods, styles, and topics. He liked to use this method to portray the myriad of emotions and dramatic twists that a good story has. Mozart’s interpretation of theTurkish style included fast-paced, rousing percussion: timpani, triangle, cymbals, and bass drum. Europeans at the time were somewhat fascinated by this kind of exciting percussion that emulated the sounds of the Janissaries (the elite unit of the Ottoman military forces). This trend led to the expansion of European orchestra percussion sections, and many composers produced similar sounds to what Mozart created in his Overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio.
