Pacific Symphony’s SummerFest 2023, presented by City of Hope Orange County, comes to a dramatic finale on Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. at FivePoint Amphitheatre. City of Hope Orange County presents Tchaikovsky Spectacular: A Concert of Hope, honoring cancer survivors, patients, and their loved ones. The program opens with Beethoven’s inspiring Symphony No. 5. The work’s dramatic coloring and protean moods provide a breathtaking soundtrack to the lush September night. After intermission, award-winning pianist Claire Huangci—champion of the 2018 Geza Anda Competition—joins Pacific Symphony to perform Rachmaninoff’s deeply expressive Piano Concerto No. 2, a piece with strong emphasis on lyrical themes and sweeping melodies. The evening concludes with Tchaikovsky’s victorious “1812 Overture,” which marries triumphant instrumentation and resounding cannons with spectacular fireworks.
