The Force Was Strong with Pacific Symphony’s Starry Night Gala

Greetings, fellow Star Warriors and music lovers! This past May the Fourth, we took a stellar leap into the cosmos at the Hyatt Regency Irvine, where Pacific Symphony hosted its annual gala under the theme “Starry Night: May the Fourth.” Yes, the force was definitely with us as we raised an astronomical sum of over $2 million to support our artistic, education, and community engagement programs!

A Galactic Gathering of the Finest Kind
Our cosmic evening kicked off with a bang at the cocktail reception, transforming everyone to a galaxy not so far away. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as attendees—many decked out in their finest Star Wars and Star Trek attire—were greeted by none other than a holographic version of Principal Pops Conductor Enrico Lopez-Yañez, courtesy of America’s Got Talent illusionist Trigg Watson.

Drink and Be Merry, You Must
The soirée featured out-of-this-world delights, including our signature cocktail, the HAL-9000—a dazzling mix of Champagne, hibiscus liqueur, and garnish. As the “Star Wars Cantina Band” set the mood, guests mingled over watermelon feta bites and prosciutto-and-melon skewers, proving that even in a galaxy far, far away, good taste is universal.

Dinner Under the Stars
As the clock struck six, the blue-lit ballroom doors swooshed open (yes, just like in Star Trek), revealing a dining setup that was nothing short of celestial. Planets from the Milky Way hung above as twinkling stars danced along the walls. The dinner, curated by the Michelin-starred force that is Chef Tony Esnault of Knife Pleat, featured a spring salad followed by wild Alaskan halibut—each dish a testament to culinary excellence.

The Grand Jedi Gathering
Our very own Symphony Jedi, Chairman Arthur Ong, and the Gala Co-Chairs, Judy Whitmore and Scott Seigel, welcomed the crowd. Scott’s entrance, accompanied by the foreboding tones of the “Star Wars Imperial March,” was a showstopper. Judy’s heartfelt thanks to all reminded us that this isn’t just a gala; it’s a family reunion of sorts for those who support the symphony’s mission.

A Night of 1000 Stars
As the evening progressed, President and CEO John Forsyte, aka “Oboe-Wan Kenobi,” revealed the major gifts fueling our mission. Notably, Judy and Wes Whitmore announced a $2.5 million endowment for the Associate Concertmaster Chair—a move that surely strengthens the force within our musical galaxy.

A Musical Duel to Remember
The highlight of the night? A spectacular showdown between our wind and brass players, dueling with iconic scores from Star Wars. It was a battle of melodies and harmonies where, in true Jedi fashion, balance was restored with a draw.

The Dreams We Fund
Our annual “Fund-A-Dream” segment reminded everyone why we gather under the stars—to make music education accessible to all. Thanks to spirited bidding and generous donations, including a challenge grant by John Tu and matching funds by Sandy Segerstrom Daniels, we’re set to make even more musical dreams come true.

Dancing Through the Universe
The evening concluded on a high note with a performance by “JT and Friends,” setting the dance floor alight with jazz favorites. Guests left not only with goodie bags but with hearts full of joy and hope, a testament to the enduring power of music to bring us together.

Join Us on This Journey
As we set our sights on the stars, we’re reminded of Master Yoda’s wise words: “Do or do not, there is no try.” Well, Pacific Symphony did, and how! Thank you to everyone who joined us on this interstellar journey. Here’s to many more years of bringing harmony to the universe through the magic of music. May the Fourth—and the force—be with you always!
