In Memoriam: Ellie Gordon, A Woman of Valor Devoted to the Arts and Family

Eleanor (“Ellie”) Gordon’s life was a symphony, each movement reflecting the many ways she enriched the lives of those around her. Alongside her husband Mike, Ellie was a devoted supporter of the arts, particularly classical music, which was central to their shared journey. Their profound impact on the cultural landscape of Orange County, especially through their support of Pacific Symphony, is exemplified by their endowment of the Concertmaster Chair, currently held by Dennis Kim. “Ellie was always the brightest spirit in the room,” notes Dennis. “She loved music, and she loved Pacific Symphony, but for me, I lost my biggest fan. The concert hall every Thursday will be bittersweet for me, never ever the same.”

Ellie’s love of music began early, sparked by her father taking her to youth concerts at the Philadelphia Orchestra. This passion grew over the years and became something she shared deeply with Mike. Fittingly, their first date was at a Philadelphia Orchestra concert—an event that would spark a lifetime of music, travel, family, and philanthropy.

Married for 64 years, Ellie and Mike traveled the world together. Whether exploring the Caribbean or spending summers on Cape Cod, they found joy in music, each other’s company, and time with their children and grandchildren. Their love of music remained a constant, from attending concerts in their early years to becoming major supporters of Pacific Symphony.

Ellie’s generosity was boundless. She chaired six Pacific Symphony galas and supported numerous organizations, including University Synagogue, Angels of the Arts, Jewish Federation, Heritage Pointe, and Irvine Barclay Theatre. Her leadership left an indelible mark on the Orange County community. When Ellie asked you for a donation, it was always done with such joy and conviction that you simply said “yes.” As John Forsyte, President and CEO of Pacific Symphony, reflects, “Ellie had a profound belief in the transformative power of the arts. Her enthusiasm and commitment created a legacy that will continue to enrich our community for generations.”

Ellie was also known for her personal connections with artists. She loved sponsoring concerts featuring major guest performers and orchestra members, often forming lasting friendships. One of her most cherished relationships was with the renowned pianist André Watts. They regularly exchanged emails and shared meals whenever he performed in Orange County, a bond that reflected the personal care and warmth Ellie brought to every aspect of her life.

At the heart of Ellie’s life was her family. She was a devoted wife to Mike, a loving mother to David and the late Susan, and an adoring grandmother. Her family describes her as someone who always put others first, whether caring for her own children or making everyone she met feel valued and heard.

Those who knew Ellie remember her as upbeat, bubbly, and full of life. “Ellie had a beautiful soul,” says Pacific Symphony Music Director Carl St.Clair. “She brought light and joy everywhere she went. Her life was like a symphony—each movement reflecting her love of family, her passion for music, and her unwavering commitment to this community.” St.Clair likened Ellie’s life to a grand symphony, with a strong foundation, joyful harmony, and an inspiring legacy that continues beyond her passing.

Ellie had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome, especially newcomers to the Pacific Symphony family. She made it a point to reach out to those who were new, ensuring they felt at home in the community she cherished. John Forsyte shares, “Ellie and Mike always made a beeline toward my wife Michele and me at every reception, greeting us with a warm embrace that made us feel like the work we do at the Symphony truly mattered. Whether it was a thoughtful note, a congratulatory phone call, or simply showing up when we needed a boost, they were always there. Ellie and Mike were inseparable, and together, they were not only devoted patrons but cherished members of our Symphony family.”

The countless lives Ellie touched—through her charitable work, friendships, and family—are a testament to her generous spirit and the love she shared. Her vibrant personality, sense of humor, and kindness will be deeply missed, but her legacy endures through the many organizations and individuals who continue to benefit from her contributions. We at Pacific Symphony are committed to honoring Ellie Gordon’s memory by continuing the work she so passionately supported.
