Even as a child, music coursed through Cavanaugh’s veins. Encouraged by his supportive family and inspired by his hero Billy Joel, he formed his very first band at just 10 years old. While other kids were playing pickup games of baseball, Michael was honing his skills at local functions, pouring his passion into every key he struck.

After cutting his teeth at a lively piano bar in Orlando, fate intervened in the most extraordinary way. One fateful night in February 2001, as Cavanaugh performed at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, the one and only Billy Joel stepped onto the stage to join him. It took only two songs before Joel knew he had found his protégé—his new “Piano Man.”

Cavanaugh’s wildest dreams were realized when Joel handpicked him to star in the Broadway musical Movin’ Out. For three years and over 1,200 performances, he embodied Joel’s iconic songbook, receiving both Tony and GRAMMY nominations in a crowning achievement.

But Cavanaugh’s story was just beginning. With Movin’ Out‘s curtain closing in 2005, he embarked on his own tour de force, reinterpreting the modern pop/rock songbook with his inimitable style.
