Glenn Gould plays the scherzo from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in the transcription by Franz Liszt. Initially, Gould’s tempo may seem too slow, but it works quite well over the long haul I think.

I guess you need to forget about the tempo mark, not to mention the symphony as a whole, and then it makes sense in itself, as a completely different piece of music, for a very different instrument. Then, it’s quite strong and effective. Provocative.
